The Liberal Democrats have held on to Elmbridge's Claygate ward following last night's byelection.
Jack Saltman was elected with 744 votes, beating the Conservative Party candidate Geoffrey Herbert, by 99 votes.
The byelection was held following the death of the ward's previous councilor, Hugh Ashton, who died in January.
Councillor Ashton suffered a heart attack at a Citizens Advice Bureau trustees meeting.
The UK Independence Party candidate, Bernard Collignon, came third with 63 votes followed by the Labour Party's Robert King.
Voter turnout was 29.7 per cent compared to 44 per cent of the electorate voting in last May's election.
Councillor Saltman will serve on the council until his term of office expires in May 2008.
