The environment has hit the airwaves and Britain's first radio station to focus on green issues is broadcasting out of a studio in south London.

Passion for the Planet, based in South Wimbledon, has been sending out its mix of world music and features about health and the environment for four and a half years.

It now reaches more than 60,000 digital radio listeners in London and the south of the England, and has teamed up with the Croydon Guardian to support this year's Green Guardian awards.

The stations managing director Chantal Cooke said: "Our aim is to bring information about people's health and environment to them in an accessible way. We help them understand the options available to them so they can decide what they want to do and how they want to live."

In between bursts of world music, the radio station touches on topics such as the climate change bill, Common Agricultural Policy for farmers in the European Union and the environmental impact of tourism in St Lucia. The subjects of its pre-recorded interviews include Earthwatch, the RSPB, and Sean Duggan, editor of the South London Guardian.
