This week we begin our search to find the greenest schools in Croydon - and we want your help.

If you know a school that does a lot for the environment, in or out of the classroom, then why not nominate it for best green school at this year's Green Guardian awards?

This year there are two categories, one for primary, infant and junior schools, and another for secondary. Anybody can nominate, whether you are a parent, a teacher, a pupil or just someone who has benefited from something the school did.

It is a really good way to let people know how committed the school is to environmental issues and can act as an incentive to staff and pupils.

Last year's winners, St Joseph's RC Primary School in Upper Norwood, went on to be commended at the regional finals and are now urging readers to nominate.

Christine Whitmarsh, physical health and social education co-ordinator, said: "The children were very excited by the awards, especially when we won. It encourages the kids to do more green acts so people should definitely nominate their school.

"Our students are very proud of how much they know about the environment compared to other children their age."

Winners in both awards in the borough will go through to the glittering regional finals in November with the chance to win prizes for their school.

We are also giving away a free Green Guide Essentials book worth £7.99 while stocks last to anyone who nominates someone in any of our seven categories.
