Young sporting stars from schools throughout the borough were honoured at an awards ceremony last week.

Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Janet Marshall, presented gongs to youngsters at the Croydon Schools' Sports Council's Excellence in Sports Awards.

Recipients included 16-year-old Sean Scannell, a pupil at Ashburton Community School, who has scored three goals for the under-17 Republic of Ireland football team.

Peter Westlake and Mike Wadsley were honoured for 25 years involvement with Croydon Schools' Football Association.

Tom Maughan, former honorary secretary of Croydon Schools' Football Association, and current honorary secretary and Croydon Guardian contributor David Lomas received certificates from the London Federation of Sport and Recreation for a combined total of 70 years voluntary service in the capital.
