Naomi Campbell turned up in high heels at the start of a week of cleaning duties at a New York rubbish depot.

The Streatham supermodel wore black, platform-soled £585 Christian Louboutin spike-heeled boots as she embarked on five days of community service.

In January, the 36-year-old admitted assaulting her maid Ana Scolavino by throwing her crystal-encrusted phone during an argument about a pair of missing jeans.

She was also fined £185 ordered to complete a two day anger management programme.

Campbell did have a pair of combat-style work boots slung over her shoulder as she made her way to Manhattan District 3 Garage operated by the New York's Department of Sanitation, which is responsible for clearing rubbish from the city's streets.

She was issued with an orange reflector vest, dust mask and work gloves to mop floors and sweep corridors around the 120,000 sq ft facility.

She will work from 8am to 4pm, with one hour for lunch and two 15 minute breaks.

Campbell was given permission to carry out her sentence indoors so she could avoid the media mob that greeted Culture Club frontman Boy George when he swept streets as punishment for falsely reporting a burglary.

Albert Durrell, deputy chief of the Department of Sanitation, told the New York Daily News: "Hopefully, she'll know not to come in high heels or anything like that.

"Sneakers and blue jeans are a good idea. Wearing Manolos is not. It's no-nonsense here. This is not a club, it's a sanitation facility."
