A vigil is to be held for murdered teenager James Smartt-Ford at Streatham Ice Arena tonight, from 7pm.

It is now five weeks since the 16-year-old was shot dead when a gang of up to 40 youths stormed the ice rink during one of its disco nights, which was attended by about 350 people.

So far eight people, including six male youths, have been arrested and bailed in connection with the shooting, but police are still keen to reiterate their appeal.

Shortly before 11pm, on February 3, James had been at the bottom of the stairs leading on to the ice when he was approached by a black male. Two or three shots were fired at him and he staggered for a few metres before falling on to the ice.

He was pronounced dead at St George's Hospital at midnight. A postmortem later gave the cause of death as gunshot wounds but the police are still retaining an open mind as to what the motive was.

DCI Adnan Qureshi, of Operation Trident, said: "It is imperative that members of the local community, and those of James' friends, who were present at Streatham ice-rink on the night that he was murdered come forward - if they have not already done so.

"As with any Trident investigation, we are keen to speak to anyone with information about this shooting, and would like to stress that all calls can, and will, be treated in the strictest of confidence."

Anyone with information, or who was at the event, should call the incident room on 020 8247 4554 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
