Family numeracy classes in Croydon have proved so successful the Basic Skills Agency has asked to film classes for a leading television education channel.

Teachers TV is funded by the Government and produced to help people based in the education sector.

The family numeracy classes are run by Croydon's Continuing Education and Training Service (CETS) and have been effective in involving Asian parents in supporting their children and getting more involved in their schools.

The programme is being produced by Action TV following research by the University of Sunderland. It looks at Bangladeshi and Pakistani families and features statistics from last year which show poor achievement among those groups.

On Wednesday, March 21, Action TV will film a family numeracy session in action. They will interview some of the learners, including Neelam Dungarwalla, one of CETS's teachers, Musseret Anwar, CETS head of family learning, and the head teacher at Winterbourne Juniors, Janet Godfrey.

Family Learning provides learning opportunities between the children and parents, particularly for disadvantaged families in Croydon and courses aim to improve parents' ability to support their children in developing skills.

Croydon's cabinet member for education, youth and lifelong learning, Councillor Maria Gatland, said: "Croydon has a reputation for delivering excellent family learning programmes which have produced good results for many years.

"I am delighted their success is being used as an example and I hope it will be an inspiration for other programmes across the UK."

Each year CETS Family Learning Team delivers more than 100 similar courses and workshops across the borough, with more than 700 families taking part.
