Year six pupils enjoyed an afternoon out of the classroom to learn about possible dangers in every day situations, including what to do in an emergency and how to safely use London transport.

Children from Haslemere School in Mitcham listened to representatives from St John Ambulance, the police and firefighters.

The initiative, which is part of Safer Merton's Junior Citizen's scheme, aims to help support children in their transition from primary school to secondary education.

Haslemere school was one of 11 primary schools in the Merton borough to take advantage of the scheme.

Over the course of the week, 550 children attended the sessions, which took place at Bait-ul-Futuh in Morden.
