The recent violent deaths of four young people in Southwark and Lambeth are an absolute tragedy for the individuals, their families and the communities most affected.
We should not however, lose sight of the fact that overwhelmingly, communities across Southwark and Lambeth are ambitious, aspirational and law-abiding.
They are made up of good people and good parents doing the best for their children.
I have been working with community organisations across my constituency who are involved in providing options and alternatives that help young people to make better choices in their lives.
We must seize the opportunity to listen to young people and respond to their calls for more to do and better facilities - an alternative to the street.
I am holding a meeting shortly - at 5.30pm on March 9 at the Old Library, 14-16 Knights Hill, SE27 - with young people across West Norwood to focus on this issue. Any constituents - particularly young people - who are interested in taking part should contact my office on 020 7219 3409 or by email to jowellt@parliament.uk.
TESSA JOWELL, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood
