Tooting & Mitcham assistant manager George Wakeling has tipped keeper Dave King to win the club's player-of-the-year award after a string of outstanding performances.

King's excellent displays this season have given the Terrors the best defensive record in the league and seven clean sheets.

Wakeling said: "King has had a very consistent season. He has the occasional rush of blood to the head but, over the campaign, he has been as good as any keeper in the league.

"He must be in with a shout of being named our player of the season and players' player of the season.

"I truly believe he has been that good this season."

Even King's heroics could not prevent Tooting dropping two points at home to Sittingbourne on Saturday, despite taking a 2-1 lead with only five minutes to play after Ronnie Green added to Eben Allen's opener.

Wakeling admits he and boss Billy Smith were disappointed at conceding a late goal.

"We started off well and we were in control," he said.

"We should have won but we didn't get that cushion that would have killed them off.

"We took our foot off the pedal and it cost us.

"Our lack of concentration after taking the lead in the last five minutes cost us two points."

Wakeling said that, with his side having clean bill of health and the return of Joe Vines from injury, he was sure the Terrors could continue their nine-match unbeaten run in the league, provided players just back from injury can get their fitness to the required level.

"Our injuries have finally cleared up but the problem we have now is some of them have been out for such a long time that they are not 100 per cent match fit," he added.

"I have always said that, if we can get our best players on the pitch when they are all 100 per cent, then we are as good as anyone in this league."
