Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison insists he is happy to play the father figure to the current crop of youngsters making a name for themselves at Selhurst Park.

In recent weeks, academy graduates Lewwis Spence and Lewis Grabban have received call-ups to the first team squad, along with recent signing Dave Martin, 21.

Palace boss Peter Taylor revealed last week that 16-year-old starlet Victor Moses may be involved before the end of the season.

With several youngsters starting to feature in the first team, the club's senior players have a role to ensure they settle in, something Morrison - hardly a veteran himself at 27 - has taken upon himself to do.

"People say I am a bit of a father figure, but I'm not pushing 30 just yet," he said.

"It is good to help the youngsters and, when I see them coming through and doing well, I am pleased for them.

"They need help - they are young and have just come out of the youth team so, when they join us in training, they are a bit nervous.

"I just tell them to express themselves. I say to them you have signed professional forms, the club must think you are good enough, so go out there and show people what you can do'. And that is what they all do."

Nineteen-year-old Spence made his full debut against Burnley on Saturday and showed some neat touches on the left flank.

Grabban came on as a second-half substitute to play alongside Morrison, and the striker feels they are already making an impact.

"I think Spence did well. He's not really a left winger but he impressed me. Grabban has got pace and is exciting. He is a bit raw but he will get better with age.

"Both of them have got a big future. The kids coming through at Palace can stand the club in good stead for years to come."

One man the Republic of Ireland international clearly rates is Moses. The England U17 international signed a long-term deal with the Eagles last week and Morrison has tipped him for the top.

"He's a special one," he said. "Victor needs to work hard, but his ability is frightening - he could come into the first team now and do a job.

"He is built like a man already. Maybe next year he might come into the team and stay there."

Can they strike up a partnership?

"I will probably be retired by the time he comes in," joked Morrison. "But, hopefully, I could have a good partnership with Victor because he is a good player.

"There was talk of him signing for Chelsea or Manchester United. Whoever kept him at the club - be it the gaffer, the chairman or Gary Issott the youth team manager - it is a great addition.

"The boy has got it all and can make you look silly. He will get fans back into Selhurst Park, definitely."
