A disabled Thorton Heath pensioner has thanked the Croydon Guardian for helping him win his battle against a parking fine - issued because his blue badge was covered by snow.

Colin Hayes, who has arthritic knees and needs a walking stick, woke up on January 24 to find the ticket on his car which was parked in a disabled bay outside his home in Beverstone Road.

Because the badge had been covered by heavy overnight snow a council warden simply issued a ticket for £40.

Mr Hayes, 77, said: "The parking ticket said the badge was not viewable on the windscreen, but all the warden had to do was move the snow and she would have seen it."

The pensioner gave the ticket a frosty reception and rang the Croydon Guardian to get help. We called the town hall on Mr Hayes' behalf and red-faced officers thawed and agreed to rescind it.

On hearing the news, Mr Hayes said: "I am pleased, I want to thank the Croydon Guardian. But I don't want to get another one so when there is a frost I have to make sure the windscreen is clear."
