Local Wandsworth movers and shakers will be celebrating this Wednesday as many of our most well known residents have taken to the road on two wheels as part of the Wandsworth Cycling Campaign's Movers and Shakers' Project.

With MPs Sadiq Khan and Justine Greening taking up cycle training and joining Martin Linton MP, already a well known cyclist, now all three of Wandsworth's Members of Parliament are championing the health benefits and enjoyment of cycling. They joined many others including local teachers, the Wandsworth Police Borough Commander, town centre managers for Clapham Junction and Tooting, the Secretary of the Battersea Society and Local Councillors in the project which aims to give leading local people a chance to receive training to help show how easy and enjoyable cycling is.

The project, funded by Transport for London and to be shortlisted for the Transport for London Community Cycling Awards, aimed to give local people who either did not cycle at all or who did not feel confident cycling on a regular basis a chance to receive professional training from Cycle Training UK. The results were a resounding thumbs up for cycling by all the participants and some stunning results. As Linea Ross, the Head of Adult and Community Learning at South Thames College said: "I'm a lot more confident. Yes, I'm cycling more. I've got more confident through small, commonsense tips. I didn't imagine I would ever cycle to Wandsworth town centre! I'm saving time - it's quicker. I have already noticed improvements to my waistline now I'm doing more exercise. My colleagues have noticed I'm cycling and asked why. The training has helped me tremendously. I shall keep going."

And Sadiq Khan MP after receiving cycle training: "One of the things that the training has given me is confidence. I'm a cyclist who cycles in the summer months and avoids busy roads. This course has demonstrated that it's possible to cycle safely amongst cars, motorcycles, van and, dare I say it, lorries as well. I'm very impressed by the work done in advance of my session, working out the route, working out the best way for me to get to work but also working out a way for it to be enjoyable too, wonderful to cross the commons, but still getting to work quickly too, and safely. It's really important that we put into practice all our good intentions and spread the word, and it's really important that it comes from professionals to give those of us who are infrequent cyclists the confidence to become frequent cyclists."
