I was interested to read the article about fly-tipping, car break-ins and poor lighting in Warren Road (Fly-typical round our way, Croydon Guardian, February 14).

As a woman who commutes into London and then walks back along Warren Road after dark, I do not feel safe.

Particularly as the pavement only runs on one side of the road so you cannot cross over if you suspect you are being followed. There are also no houses or escape routes. If one of the dimly-lit street lamps is not working then a considerable stretch of the road is left in darkness.

Furthermore, I have poor night vision which usually gives me no trouble in well-lit streets but Warren Road is much more dimly-lit than most roads.

My partner and I have been in touch with the council about brightening the lighting but we only got a perfunctory response, which said that there is no budget for improvements and they would be very surprised if anything happened in the near future.

CCTV cameras could easily solve the rash of car break-ins and surely would save the police money in terms of the time spent dealing with them.

The solutions do seem very simple. Let's hope the ever increasing amounts of council tax we pay might actually find its way into budgets that make a real difference to safety and crime.
