Forty years ago Yorkshireman Neal Hattersley visited Kingston on his way down to Dover for a summer holiday.

He was so impressed by the beauty of the light around Kingston Bridge that he now wants to bring an innovative art project to this stretch of riverside.

Mr Hattersley, who now lives in Hampton Wick, said: "I saw this incredible light and that vision stuck in my mind. At the time I had no idea where we were, I had simply never seen such a light effect. Years later I got hold of a map and worked out where we must have crossed the river."

Mr Hattersley has worked out that at Kingston the river Thames runs almost due north, so the sun moves around the bridge during the day.

He therefore thinks it is an ideal place for a recycled glass art project similar to the installation at the Canal de Saint Denis in Paris.

He said: "The project would use the V' shape of the quay to produce a changing light effect as the sun moves from the east to the south during the morning to early afternoon.

Chairman of the Marina Place residents' committee Christian Gale said he would welcome the art work. He said: "I would have to consult the other residents about it but obviously anything which adds to the value of where we live is a good thing."

Mr Hattersley is looking for sponsorship for the project, which he believes will revitalise Hampton Wick. His preliminary costing for the project stands at £8,000. Anyone interested in the project should call 020 8977 8929 to speak to Neal.
