Trains between London to Epsom, Dorking and Guildford were suspended due to the 'broken down' train.
Services between Sutton, Epsom and Dorking and Horsham were also disrupted according to Southern.
Southern said on Twitter trains would be disrupted from Epsom until 9am but passenger Gabriel Pizzingrilli tweeted: "and some. Already been reported no trains until 11am but not confirmed."
A frustrated passenger at Epsom station at 7.30am said they were told there would be no trains for the forseeable future.
She said there was a "mass exodus" from the platforms and she caught a bus into Sutton, arriving almost an hour and a half later.
Another commuter said trains were cancelled at Ewell West and Ewell East stations.
Cancelled trains included:
The 9.09 Horsham to London Victoria
The 7.47 London Victoria to Sutton
