Croydon-based Trojans retained their English korfball champions title after a nail-biting play-off final victory.

Having beaten Norwich Knights 25-17 in the semi-final, Trojans faced Bec from Tooting.

Goals from David Brooks (six), Sam Brooks (four), Neala Brennan (three), Tom Woodvine (two), Stephanie Allen and Kathryn Goodridge forced the finale into a golden goal showdown at 17-17.

David Brooks put Trojans ahead, meaning Bec had one return attack to attempt to level, however it was not to be and Trojans were crowned champions.

Bec's route to the final at the Whitgift School Leisure Centre saw them beat Nomads of Epsom (18-11).

Against Trojans, six goals from Davesh Patel and a Blake Palfreyman hat-trick, and scores from Jo-Anne Wilson, Joe Bedford, Amy Swain, Caitlin Fitzgeraldn, Hoyei Chow and Claire Dique pushed the holders all the way - until the heartbreak of the golden goal showdown.

What is korfball?

Korfball is a mixed team sport with four male and four female players on each team.

The game is Dutch and shares its roots with basketball and netball.

It was invented in 1902 by a Dutch schoolteacher who wanted a game that all his pupils at the first co-educational schools in Amsterdam could play together.
