The grim discovery of a severed finger led to a North Cheam park being sealed off by police.
The mystery of how the finger was discovered in Fairlands Park near Sainsbury's was solved when a man came forward and told police it was his and he injured it while trying to climb over a spiked fence.
Police sealed off the park shortly before 4pm after the section of finger was discovered near the pedestrian gates into Sainsbury's.
Subsequent enquiries led police to a man who told officers he lost the finger while scaling the fence one night earlier in the week.
It is believed he snagged the bottom part of his finger on the fence and then fell leading to his finger being 'degloved' - where the skin and flesh is pulled from the outside of the finger leaving just the bone.
He attended hospital but his finger could not be saved.
The park has been reopened.
