A byelection will be held for the Bensham Manor ward seat left vacant by the departure of Councillor Paula Shaw.
The council said a notice of vacancy was published on December 22, and soon after two electors requested the vacancy be filled at the earliest opportunity.
The election, which is due to be held on February 8, follows the decision of the Labour councillor to stand down. It is thought Coun Shaw is returning to the north of England to be closer to her family.
The former Croydon Council cabinet member was re-elected to Bensham Manor in May last year.
But months after Conservatives took control of the town hall, Coun Shaw announced she was standing down as deputy opposition leader and as a member of the council's shadow cabinet.
