Victims of the Holocaust and more recent genocides will be remembered with a public candle lighting ceremony.
This will take place in the foyer of Croydon Town Hall, Katharine Street, Croydon, on Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27 at noon.
It will be followed by a civic event from 12.30pm to 1.40pm in the council chamber, including a presentation from Bryan Huberman whose later father Alfred survived the Holocaust.
Holocaust Memorial Day marks the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945.
It will remember those murdered in the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides including those in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
In Croydon the theme for this year is journeys and each of the borough’s libraries will be taking part by hosting dedicated exhibitions.
On the day there will be a music workshop by Croydon Community Choir at Central Library, in Katharine Street, at 5pm.
There will be a Holocaust talk at 2.15pm the next day at Shirley Library, Wickham Road.
Cabinet member for communities and economic development Councillor Vidhi Mohan said: “The lessons of the Holocaust teach us the consequences of prejudice, discrimination and hatred.
“The events taking place across Croydon will bring us together to celebrate our borough’s rich diversity, while ensuring we never forget those who lost their lives to genocide.”
