A public inquiry has launched into the extension of the Northern line to Battersea.

Transport for London (TfL) have proposed to create a new stop at Battersea Power Station and another on Wandsworth Road.

A new stretch of tunnel would link the rest of the Northern line at Kennington.

The inquiry has been called for by the Secretary of State for Transport as part of the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO), which is required for major projects.

An independent inspector will run the inquiry and consider evidence submitted by TfL, individuals and organisations.

If planning powers are obtained from the Government and a funding package is in place construction could begin in 2015, with the two new stations open by 2020.

Journey times from the West End and the City would be cut to 15 minutes from Battersea.

It is hoped the extension will kick start the Nine Elms regeneration, while reducing pressure on Vauxhall station.

The new line will help support the creation of 25,000 jobs and 16,000 new homes.

Michèle Dix, managing director of planning at TfL, said: "We look forward to fully outlining our proposals for the Northern line extension. This public inquiry is part of the planning process.

"If this transport link goes ahead it would create access to the Tube for thousands of people in south London as well as helping to support new jobs and homes in the area."
