Seven men arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was found in a well in Warlingham have been bailed pending further investigation.

The men, aged between 21 and 27, were arrested yesterday after gardeners discovered the body while working outside a three bedroom cottage in Audley Drive on Friday afternoon.

The men have all been bailed until late December.

The identity and gender of the body is not yet known, but detective chief inspector Cliff Lyons, leading the investigation, said it was believed to be that of a white adult.

DCI Lloyd, who is leading the murder investigation, updates the media

The body was removed from the well by police divers yesterday afternoon, and a post mortem examination is due to take place at East Surrey mortuary today at 2pm.

DCI Lloyd said: "This is an unusual case and I would appeal for anybody who has concerns about a missing person, or who believes they may know something about this individual or incident, to call my officers.

"Although I cannot elaborate further at this time, I have reason to believe that this body was placed into the well and we are treating the incident as a murder."

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
