Vandals torched a pushchair that had been left in the stairwell of a block of flats in the latest fire in a spate of arsons in Sutton.

Firefighters and police are carrying out visits to the area around Thicket Crescent after a series of deliberate fires there.

The latest happened in the early hours of Monday morning - a pushchair that had been chained to railings in a stairwell was burnt to ashes.

Firefighters say they are called to Thicket Close on a near-weekly basis to small fires that appear to have been deliberately set. Firefighters visited the area on Friday to speak to people about fire safety and police are carrying out extra patrols.

Sergeant Stuart Murrell said: "This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and we want to bring the culprit before the courts."

A fire service spokesman added: "We have been keeping watch in Thicket Crescent because there has been a small spate of fires down there. We'll be going down there just to make sure the hallways are safe and things like that."

If you have any information about the incidents, you can call police on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
