Tonight promises to be a night of motor-racing thrills and spills at Plough Lane stadium when drivers go head-to-head in a one-off Best in Britain championship.

Drivers from the 2l hot rods, the all-action 1300cc saloon stock cars, the powerful Superstox and the thunderous Lightning Rods will be in action from 5.30pm.

In the hot rods, Mark Paffey from Havant is the man to beat after he won the Hoosier Tyres series title.

Billy Clarke from Croydon will be keen to make a greater impact this week, as will Charlie Jowers who hails from Feltham.

New Malden’s Brenden Herve will want to do well on his home track in the 1300cc saloons - the yellow grade driver generally only races at the Wimbledon Stadium, and will hope for some support from the terraces.

The last two saloon meetings have been dominated by the O’Dell family, with son Adam winning the British Championship and Dad Steve mopping up on Gala Night.

After his superb performance in clinching the Safari Land Rover Series in October, ahead of a start studded field of former and current champions, Ipswich’s Superstox multi-champion Jason Cooper, returns to do battle again in the capital.

The smart money would not bet against another hat-trick of race wins for Cooper, but with Shepperton’s Chris Capon, along with father and son Chris and Nick Roots from Aldershot also in attendance, the Suffolk man is sure to face some stiff competition.

The Lightning Rods are always good value around the Capital’s premier motor sport venue, which is sure to see some fast and furious action around the raceway.
