A book, given as a gift to a head teacher when she retired over 35 years ago, has been donated to the borough’s archive service.

The little piece of history was made for Barrow Hedges Primary School’s first head teacher Dorothy Hadingham when she retired in 1978.

It contains the original admissions register at the school and names of pupils who attended between 1955 and 1978.

It was passed onto a friend of hers, Catherine Mayes, when she passed away in 2009. The book was presented to the borough archivist and local studies manager Kath Shawcross and Councillor Jill Whitehead on Thursday October 24, 2013.

Coun Whitehead, chairperson of the environment and neighbourhood committee, said: “This is an incredibly generous donation from Mrs Mayes and we’re delighted to be able to accept this historical document.

“We will now look for a suitable way to make best use of this new resource and where possible make it available for public enjoyment.”
