The Bishop of Guildford is completing a pilgrimage by foot, steamboat and car to say farewell to the "busy and talented" diocese he has served for nine years.

Bishop Christopher, 68, retires next month, and is spending five days travelling around Surrey and Hampshire with anyone who wants to join him, spending time in prayer, reflection and conversation.

He walked through Epsom via Banstead last Thursday, October 17, passing through Banstead High Street, Garratt’s Lane, Nork Park, Great Tattenhams before having lunch and prayers at the Amato Inn in Chalk Lane.

He then walked across Epsom Common, Horton Country Park, and finished at Ruxley Church, in Ewell.

The tour is due to finish tomorrow, October 23, when he takes in Thorpe en route to Pyrford.

Bishop Christopher said: "People have been asking why I have decided to do my prayer walks in my last weeks in the diocese. "I have loved my time as bishop and have an affection for this busy and talented diocese, and for the beautiful countryside we live in. I also enjoy walking and so the idea of a farewell prayer pilgrimage arose.

"Life is a pilgrimage. I am moving on in my pilgrimage with my wife, Hilary. Therefore I depart from the diocese in pilgrim fashion, walking and praying."

Bishop Christopher's farewell service will take place on November 30 at Guildford Cathedral.
