Frustrated residents having problems with noisy neighbours could soon face having no help for half the week.

Proposed cuts to Wandsworth Council's environment department include slashing the out of hours noise service on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Environment officers will still attend call outs from Thursday to Sunday, with figures showing there are less incidents of noise nuisance at the beginning of the week.

But concerns were raised by opposition councillors during a full council meeting on Wednesday.

It is also feared areas with a high student population, such as Roehampton and Tooting, could see an increase in late-night house parties.

In questions to the leader, Labour's Councillor Mark Thomas, said: "My concern is about what will happen when the nuisance has taken place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays."

Councillor Jonathan Cook, cabinet member for environment, culture and safety, said: "If there is a persistent problem we will change arrangements if we need to deal with that.

"The most serious cases will be dealt with. I should say though we cannot prevent there being some slight diminishing of service."

Neighbours will be able to log complaints online during unstaffed hours and calls will be responded to the next working day.

Investigations into under-age selling of alcohol and cigarettes, food hygiene complaints and ad hoc license inspections are also being slashed back.

Inspections of New Covent Garden Market are being reduced, while sound limiting devices will be used in late night venues instead of out-of-hours visits.

An air quality station is also to shut, which could spell further problems for Wandsworth's high level of N02 pollution.

The council is currently consulting with businesses and stakeholders on how the changes will be imposed.
