ESHER Children's Laureate and best-selling children's author Jacqueline Wilson presented prizes to the winners of a schools' poetry competition to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. In the 11 to 14 age group, the first prize was awarded to Millie Perrin, 13, from the Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton, for her poem, The Bird Auditions. Runner-up was Fiona Thiemann, also from Lady Eleanor Holles School, for her poem, The Dove.

Millie said: "I see a lot of theatre productions and thought the idea of auditions was a good one. I'm happy to have won and also surprised. It's been great to come and receive this award at the hospice as it is a very good cause."

William Squire, 10, from Royal Kent C of E Primary School, Oxshott, won first prize in the seven to 10 age group for his poem, The Sunflower. Ted Westall from Auriol Junior School in Epsom was the runner-up for his entry, My Sunflower.

The contest was launched by the hospice to mark world hospice and palliative care day in October.
