A website that allows people to donate to community projects has been launched in Elmbridge.

Crowdfunder lets anyone interested in a specific project donate as little as £1 and possibly get a reward from the project owner as a thank you.

Community and business groups in the borough can now sign up, after Elmbridge Council and the website went into partnership with each other.

Councillor Christine Cross, portfolio holder for community development, said: “This is a great way for local groups to raise money, whether you’re looking for new sports equipment, improvement to a community building or even starting a new venture in the borough.

“Anyone with a great idea can use Crowdfund Elmbridge to raise money. I would encourage everyone to look at the Crowdfund website today and either start a project or support one.”

The Medicine Garden, Cobham, is the first group to use the website to fund the construction of the new path across the garden and have so far raised more than £3,500 of its £6,000 target.

Phil Geraghty, managing director of Crowdfunder, said the Medicine Garden project was a perfect example of how the website could be used to help a community project.

The second Crowdfund project in Elmbridge has been put forward by Elmbridge Community Link and will launch in early October.
