Crystal Palace legends past and present took part in a charity game to raise money for the Geoff Thomas Foundation on Sunday.

More than £1,500 was raised for charity as a group of Eagles legends took on a team from the White Horse Pub in Selhurst.

The event was organised by the pub’s landlord Danny Foley, with former Palace winger Eddie McGoldrick putting together the legends team.

The match ended 5-5 between the two sides at the astro turf pitch at Dagnall Park on Sunday. The White Horse were 5-1 down at half time but an inspirational team talk from Mr Foley saw his side score four goals in the second half.

Legends who took part in the match included ex-manager Steve Coppell, Neil Shipperley, Kenny Sansom, Steve Kember and Richard Shaw among others.

After the game, fans went to the White Horse Pub and got the opportunity to speak to some of their legends.

Danny Foley, speaking after the event, said: “It was an absolutely top day. Steve Coppell was fantastic, he was so funny on the touchline.

“He was brilliant, he telling Stevie Kember to use his pace and things like that. It was great.

“The whole things was great and getting the players back to the pub after was brilliant. We raised a good amount of money for the Geoff Thomas Foundation as well which was fantastic.”

Crystal Palace co-chairman Stephen Browett, whose son Ben featured for the legends team, said it was a fantastic occasion.

He said: “It was a real privilege to watch, and meet, some of the Palace heroes of my youth – Coppell, Sansom, Kember – on Sunday as well as those from slightly more recent times – Shaw, Shipperley, McGoldrick.

“I was particularly proud because I managed to persuade Eddie to let my 20 year old son Ben make up the numbers.

“Seeing your own son receive a pass from Steve Kember and then lay it off to Neil Shipperley is like a dream come true for any Palace-supporting Dad.

“It doesn’t get any better than that. It was a great day out for me and I’m delighted that it raised £1500 for Geoff Thomas’s charity. I’d like to thank Danny Foley and his regulars at the White Horse for all their hard work in making this happen.”
