Tributes have been paid to a popular jeweller who died suddenly after working in Epsom market for more than a decade.

Jerry Greenberg ran the stall for 11 years with his wife selling, buying and repairing jewellery.

Mr Greenberg, 75, died of a blod clot on Sunday, August 11.

The day before he had been in the market manning his stall. A jeweller by trade for 55 years, Mr Greenberg had worked in Harrods and Selfridges before running his own chain of five jewellery shops.

Friends in the market described him as "a warm-hearted man" who was "liked by everyone."

Wife Wendy said: "He was caring, friendly, understanding and a very hardworker."

She said they would leave their home in Watford at 4.30am every Thursday and Saturday to set up in Epsom at 5.30am.

Kevin Keal, who helped on the stall, said: "He had a really good sense of humour, always laughing and joking. He would have a laugh with everyone."

Jan Baxter, who runs a nearby card stall, said he was a fun-loving, popular person who enjoyed what he did.

Fellow market trader Joe Bates said: "He was a really generous man. My kids came along one week and he gave them a silver ring each."

Daniela Titlel, 22, who works in Marks and Spencer, said Mr Greenberg was her favourite customer.

She said: "He always came in with a smiley face, never complained and knew how to make our day. He always bought his wine here. Jam doughnuts were his favourite."

Former customer Tina Tanner said: "Jerry and his wife left such a huge imprint in your heart. The market will never be the same without them."

The funeral service takes place at West Herts Crematorium on Monday, September 2, at 12.40pm.

Donations can be made to Macmillan nurses.
