A project to create sustainable food on a university campus has been awarded £230,000 funding.

The Growhampton project, a collaboration between the Roehampton Students Union and the University's Environment Team, will see the teams create an edible campus.

It is now possible to go ahead with the project after the National Union of Students Green Fund awarded it funding.

A café, food co-op and social centre selling home-grown produce, known as the Growhampton hub, will be the focal point for the project.

The hub will host workshops and events, including a farmers' market and allotment training.

Each of the university's colleges will have a community garden open to the public, while the project will offer volunteering opportunities for young people seeking work experience

Wade Tomlison, student union president, said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for students at Roehampton to lead on the sustainability agenda, and be at the forefront of the kinds of changes we need to make in society".
