A memorial football match held in memory of a trainee teacher who died from melanoma raised £3,550 for the hospice that cared for him.

Craig Muir was first diagnosed with melanoma in his eye in 2010, but two years later, despite undergoing surgery to remove his eye and attending regular health checks, the 22-year-old was told the cancer had returned.

Mr Muir of Castle Hill Avenue, New Addington, died five days after being told the disease had come back.

His family have spent the last 18 months fundraising for St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham, where the popular student who dreamed of becoming a maths teacher received palliative care.

The second annual football tournament was held at Greenacres leisure centre in Warlingham, on Saturday, ahead of August 21, which would have been Mr Muir's 24th birthday.

As well as the £3,550 raised at the event, Mr Muir's parents Julie and Alan and siblings Kirsti and Callum have raised more than £20,000 for the hospice.

Speaking about the event, Mrs Muir said: "We are so pleased, despite the horrible weather we had a fantastic turn out for Craig and everyone had a great time.

"We raised £1,672 from the auction on the day, it was a really good day and everyone enjoyed it and it was a lovely atmosphere for us all to remember Craig."
