Students from a Cobham school earned the chance to go on a sight-saving charity internship to Panama in a flying hospital.

Two students from ACS Cobham International School went on the training mission aboard the famous Orbis Flying Eye Hospital.

Yousif Salih, 16, and Fidan Damirova, 17, joined two students from other ACS schools as well as a team of ophthalmologists on the trip in August.

Yousif said: “There were many different reasons why I chose to apply for the scheme, the biggest being my dream to enter the field of medicine.

“The trip has given me a unique insight into the responsibilities of becoming a doctor and has inspired me more than ever to continue chasing my dream.”

The pair won places on the programme, now in its 13th year, after a rigorous application process.

The mission was part of an internship sponsored by the schools foundation and Oorbis, an international charity training eye care teams in developing countries and improving access to quality eye-care.

Fidan said: “The work Orbis does is truly life changing for people who cannot afford to get the medical help they need.

“The Orbis team not only cure people but also help teach local doctors which is really important work.”
