An Epsom Council spokesman said: "They tried to stop in Kiln Lane and we are monitoring them as they go through the borough."

He said five caravans and six cars arrived in Stamford Green from the Dorking area at about 8.30am.

He said two senior council officers, a streetcare manager and a solicitor together with police served a notice on the travellers and carried out a welfare check.

He said: "The council and police were working in partnership for the benefit of the local community but also made sure the welfare of the travellers was of utmost importance."

Earlier, police and rangers evicted the group of six caravans from the cricket green at Stamford Green, off Christ Church Road near the Cricketers Inn.

But by 11.20am there was just one caravan and a motorhome left at the site.

At that time, an Epsom Council spokesman said the travellers were recently moved on from Guilford and Horley.

At about 11am Epsom and Ewell safer neighbourhood team said on Facebook that local officers and response teams were dealing with an incursion of vehicles into the common land.

The team said: "Epsom and Ewell Borough council were consulted and a Section 61 Dispersal Notice has been issued on the authority of local Borough Inspector Craig Knight.

"We will be monitoring the situation for the next few hours as well as compliance to the order too."

A police spokeswoman said they were informed about the incursion at about 8.30am.

She said: "Officers engaged with those on the site to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

"A Section 61 dispersal notice was served and the travellers were given until 12pm to vacate the land which they did on their own accord."
