A burglar has been jailed for trying to steal expensive bottles of whisky and rum during a bungled raid on a pub.

Wallington man Mark Ross went into The Grange pub in London Road, Hackbridge, and snuck upstairs into a private bar that was empty at the time and tried to take alcohol worth £200 at around 10.45pm on May 21.

Ross, of Marchmont Road, was caught in the act by the pub's landlord.

The pair had a brief scuffle, Ross dropped the bottle and fled the pub empty handed.

But Ross had been caught on CCTV during the incident and left fingerprints all over the bottles he tried to steal.

That meant police were able to go to his home and arrest him.

During a search of his home, police also found several prescription pads belonging to a doctor's surgery in Mulgrave Road, Sutton.

Ross was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail after pleading guilty to burglary and receiving stolen goods in front of Croydon Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 2.

Just days earlier, Ross had been given an ASBO at the same court banning him from entering any school or other teaching establishment after being convicted for a string of burglaries at schools.

If you see Ross near a school, police say you should call 999.
