Business experts doubled a charity shop's takings in an Apprentice-style takeover exercise.

Employees from Reigate-based firm 1st Credit did a day long takeover of the Cheam branch of Rainbow Trust in the style of BBC show The Apprentice.

1st Credit staff were asked to drive up profits at the Broadway-based store, and the charity's other shop in Leatherhead, while taking part in other challenges including window dressing.

At the end of the day, on Thursday, August 1, the teams were driven back to the boardroom where the member of staff deemed to have done the least was 'fired'.

Prior to the day the teams raised money for the charity with a series of events including a curry eating contest and a rock gig.

On the day, the teams organised face painting, photo opportunities and cake sales with the end result of takings going up by 200 per cent.

Eddie Nott, chief executive of 1st Credit, said: "Every year we choose to support a number of local charities in recognition of the valuable contribution they make to the local community.

"The fantastic work of the Rainbow Trust in the local area has really struck a chord with the 1st Credit team and the enthusiasm and hard work that has gone into this challenge is staggering.

"I am incredibly proud of everyone who has been involved with this event."
