Holidaymakers must make sure they carry health insurance cards when travelling abroad, Carshalton and Wallington's MP has warned.

Tom Brake called the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) "the most important travel accessory you'll need" as it means travellers are entitled to the same health benefits as natives in the country they are visiting.

He also warned people not to trust websites trying to charge for renewal of the cards as they are a free service provided by the Government.

"Going on holiday is expensive enough and the last thing anyone wants while abroad is having to cover a hefty health care bill."

"This is why the EHIC is probably the most important travel accessory you’ll need.

"However, I would like to urge everyone to beware of scam sites which try to charge a fee for the card. EHIC is entirely free of charge and it is a good idea to apply through the NHS website to avoid being ripped off."

European Health Insurance Cards can be obtained for free up to 10 working days before leaving the UK via www.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0300 3301350.
