Pub patrons desperate to protect their favourite watering hole will look to use legislation to secure its future.

Enterprise Inns, the freeholders of The Wheatsheaf Pub, in Upper Tooting Road, Tooting confirmed they no longer plan to sell the site last week.

Dan Watkins, chairman of the Tooting Wheatsheaf Supporters, is working to get the pub listed as a community asset.

This would give fans of the pub the chance to put in a bid for the freehold if it is put up for sale.

Pub-goers are also calling on the Wandsworth Council to use an Article Four Direction, which allows councillors to rule on any potential change of use.

It would be the first pub in the borough to get this status if granted.

Campaigner Chris McQuiggin said: “The asset value is the next step but we need to keep the pressure on the council and push for the Article 4 which is the only way we can secure the long term future of the pub, unless anyone has a couple of million pound to spend.”

A review meeting is set to take place on August 15 regarding the pub's status as a community asset.
