Firefighters spent five hours extinguishing a blaze at Ewell Castle School yesterday.
An Epsom fire officer said they were called to a roof fire at the private school, in Church Street, Ewell, at 10am.
He said: "I believe it was the roof of the main school building.
"About 40 per cent of the roof was on fire. It was a reasonably long incident - we left there at 3pm."
The officer said the "likely cause" of the fire was decorators stripping paint using industrial equipment.
A Surrey Police spokesman said the fire was in the roof of a building which is being refurbished and that it is not being investigated.
He said no one was injured.
The spokesman added: "Officers and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service quickly attended the scene and, as a precaution, police closed Church Street between the junctions with London Road and the High Street.
"The road was fully reopened shortly after 1pm."
