The redevelopment of an eyesore in North Cheam could be delayed as the owners put it up for sale.
Victoria House, in Malden Road, has stood empty for a number of years.
The council agreed in June to an application to demolish the existing building and construct a new one with 75 flats and shops on the ground floor in its place.
Having worked closely with the owners the council has now expressed its “disappointment” at the potential delay to the rebuild.
Councillor Richard Clifton, vice-chair of Sutton’s housing, economy and business committee, said: “Regenerating our town centres is a key part of our Opportunity Sutton economic growth programme and we are very keen to see this important site brought back into use as quickly as possible.
“It is disappointing that it seems there is now going to be a delay while the future ownership of the building is resolved. But, whoever the owner, we are ready to continue working with them to turn this eyesore into a valuable part of the community.”
