A gunman has been jailed for life for murdering a heroic Thornton Heath stepdad who was protecting his family in his home.

Christopher Thomas shot dead Carlton Ned after forcing his way into his Langdale Road house in the early hours of July 1, 2011.

He will spend at least 35 years behind bars after a jury convicted him of murder this afternoon.

Mr Ned, 41, had been protecting his wife Donna Michael and stepson Karl Wilson from two armed and masked intruders during what prosecutors described as a "mid-summer's night nightmare."

Thomas, 22, of Morrison House, Tulse Hill, had intended to kill Mr Wilson, an aspiring rapper and reformed gang member.

A jury this afternoon found him guilty by majority verdict of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent and possession of a firearm this afternoon.

They began their deliberations on Wednesday afternoon.
