Cheam cyclist Joanna Rowsell broke her collar bone taking part in RideLondon on Saturday.

Olympic gold medallist Rowsell was involved in a pile up during the final stages of the women's criterium race in St James's Park.

The event was part of RideLondon, a weekend of events aimed to appeal to riders of different ages and abilities.

The former Nonsuch High School for Girls pupil landed heavily on her left shoulder during the last lap crash.

She was taken to hospital where x-rays revealed a broken collar bone.

She tweeted: "Well this is far from ideal.. In hospital with a broken collar bone. Thank you for all the messages. I will bounce back!"

Rowsell had hoped to be taking part in Sunday's 100mile road race but was forced to sit the event out.

She returned to Twitter to say: "Absolutely gutted to be missing the @RideLondon 100 today for @actionmedres. Massive good luck to everyone riding. Will be an amazing day.

"Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages. In pain this morning but doing ok and getting looked after :-)"

Rowsell won gold in the team pursuit event at last year's Olympic Games in London.
