A group of aspiring young police officers helped raise almost £1,500 for charity during a competition for would-be cops.

Kingston Police Cadets took part in a weekend-long competition at the Metropolitan Police's training headquarters in Hendon.

Challenges included arrest procedures and riot shield runs, with each team donating £50 to enter the event.

On Thursday, the cadets gathered outside New Scotland Yard to hand over a cheque for £1,450 to the National Autistic Society (NAS).

Sergeant Nick Ellis, who runs the cadet group, chose the NAS to thank them for the support it gave to his son James who has autism.

Sergeant Ellis said: "The NAS is a charity very close to my heart who do vital work in supporting families like mine up and down the country so I was delighted to nominate them as this year’s chosen charity.

"I am so proud of police cadets from across the capital for their efforts in the competition and for raising such a fantastic sum."

David Boorman, NAS head of supporter fundraising said: "Without the fundraising efforts of inspirational people like the police cadets, we wouldn’t be able to continue our work supporting people affected by the disability and helping them to lead the life they choose.”
