Troubled nightclub Oceana will soon be no more - after bosses announced a new name and new layout as part of a £1m rebranding excercise.

The Luminar Group, which owns the Clarence Street venue, has revealed plans to rename the club Pryzm, with a pledge to appeal to a "more mature customer base".

The flagship venue is one of 10 Oceana clubs undergoing the revamp nationwide, as Luminar attempts to draw a line under what has been a troubled nine months for the company.

The Oceana brand was irrevocably tarnished following the murder of clubber Jamie Sanderson inside the Kingston nightclub on October 25 last year.

The death saw Kingston Council revoke Luminar's licence at a public hearing in November, with opponents calling for the nightclub to be closed for good.

But the council repealed its decision after agreeing a series of licensing conditions with Luminar following a private meeting last month.

Those conditions include a reducing capacity by 15 per cent, limiting the hours for the sale of alcohol and closing on Tuesdays and Sundays.

Work to convert Oceana into Pryzm will begin in September, with the official launch scheduled for October - one year on from Mr Sanderson's death.

Oceana Kingston general manager Dan Corry said: “Oceana was a successful brand for 11 years but fashions and trends evolve and we are delighted to be part of the new Pryzm roll-out which reflects the multi-characteristics of the new design.

"The refurbished club design will have three dance arenas, an exclusive VIP area plus a chic and stylish bar all under one roof, appealing to a broader and more mature customer base.”

Luminar has promised the revamp will also create 40 new jobs, including waiters and waitresses offering table service.

Mr Corry said: “Now we have a reduced capacity, we want to focus much more on delivering a higher quality experience for a more mature customer and Pryzm offers that.

"It’s about quality not quantity and we are confident that the new look Pryzm will deliver a great experience for the clubbers of Kingston.”
