More than 30,000 people have visited Tooting Bec Lido since the recent spell of sweltering weather began earlier this month.

Over the last three weeks record numbers of people have been cooling off at the outdoor freshwater pool - the second largest of its kind in Europe.

Visitor numbers for the first three weeks in July were more than ten times higher than the same period last year.

Earlier this month The Daily Telegraph named the lido, which opened in 1906, as one of London’s best outdoor pools, describing it as "a south London treasure".

In recent years it has been named by Time Out magazine as the best in place in the capital for 'uninterrupted swimming' and as the 'Best Outdoor Swim in London' in The London Pools Campaign's Golden Goggles Award.

It is one of only a handful of surviving open air swimming pools in London and measures 91.5 metres in length, it also boasts a separate pool for toddlers and extensive space for sunbathing and picnics.

Over the past decade £1.5m has been spent by Wandsworth Council to modernise the lido.
