The collapse of a ramp covering roadworks in Cromwell Road yesterday caused gridlock throughout Kingston’s one-way system.
Two sections of plastic plating covering a trench dug by Virgin Media were dislodged by the weight of traffic, closing two lanes.
Traffic tailed back through Hampton Wick with bus services disrupted.
Kingston Council told Virgin Media to finish filling in the trench by 3pm today.
Two lanes are to be closed from 10.30am.
The work was brought forward to prevent further disruption.
Damage to the road surface following the collapse meant the company did not have enough material to complete the filling of the trench last night.
Ramps were replaced and lanes reopened shortly before 7.30pm yesterday.
