Green-fingered gardeners have been recognised in this year’s Sutton in Bloom awards.

The winners include Audrey and Michael Fawcett of Acre Lane, Carshalton, and previous winners Mr and Mrs King, representing Benhill Allotments, who snapped up the front garden and allotment prizes.

Ye Olde Red Lion in Cheam

In the fiercely-contested schools contest Muschamp Primary School in Carshalton pipped Beddington Infants School to first place.

Stanstead Manor in Saint James Road, Sutton was named the most attractive community garden.

Ye Olde Red Lion won the business frontage award and Karen McKie, manager of the 500-year-old Cheam pub, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we won but I can’t pretend that I’m an especially good gardener I’m just lucky.

“But the regulars love it and people stop to take photographs, so I am pleased it’s so popular.”

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of Sutton’s environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: “Plants and flowers brighten up our borough, so it’s a real pleasure to recognise the people who work so hard to make Sutton such a pleasant place to live and work.”

The winners will go forward to represent Sutton at the London in Bloom contest.
