Undergrowth, trees and fence panels caught fire in Ashtead yesterday evening.
Leatherhead firefighters were called to the blaze in Harriotts Lane at about 6.20pm.
A Leatherhead fire station spokesman said they used a hose and thermal imaging cameras to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
He said: "They were there for quite a while until 10 to nine. It was a hot day and the grass was really dry."
Given the hot weather he warned that if someone flicks away a lit cigarette butt outside then dry grass can easily catch fire.
He said: "Just be careful in that respect. If you smoke then make sure you stub your cigarette out."
