Police are hunting a man who approached a schoolgirl and asked her if she would like to stroke his pet dog yesterday.

The incident happened at 8.45am on July 3 when the 11-year-old girl was walking along Taleworth Road, Ashtead, when the man asked her if she would like to stroke the dog, which was in the back of his car.

The girl quickly continued with her journey and the man did not stop her or make any physical contact with her.

He is white, middle-aged, about 5ft 7ins to 10ins, and of medium build.

He was wearing a black jacket with a white trim at the bottom, blue or grey jeans, and black trainers.

He had a northern accent, an earring in his right ear and a tattoo on his neck and ankle.

Detective Constable David Fair, from Surrey Police, said: "The investigation into this incident is still in its very early stages and I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to contact us as they may hold vital information.

"I would also ask the man to contact Surrey Police to ascertain his motives as they are unknown at this time.

"The girl was able to give officers a detailed description of the man and I am confident someone will be able to identify him.

"Anyone who has their suspicions around someone they know is urged to contact us and all information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”

Mole Valley Neighbourhood Sergeant John Pearson added: "Understandably this incident has left parents worried about the safety of their children but unhelpful speculation will only heighten concerns.

"Local officers will do all they can to reassure the community following this report and will be patrolling the local area.”

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting MV/13/2520, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
